Department of History & Pakistan Studies

      The was established in 1932 with J.F. Bruce as its first Professor. It soon earned recognition owing to its high standard and expertise in a wide range of historical disciplines. The Department since then stands as one of the liveliest and the largest History Departments of all the Universities in Pakistan. It is a pioneer Department in South Asia for advanced studies and enjoys the status of being a premier and prestigious institution having fostered members of Faculty in other Universities.
      Initially local colleges cooperated with the department in organizing post graduate teaching. Some eminent scholars and professors contributed towards its advancement from time to time. Those who rendered invaluable services include Professor J.F. Bruce, Prof. Dr. A.L. Sirivastava, Prof. J.D. Ward, Dr. Ishtiaq Hussain Quereshi, Prof. Dilawer Hussain, Prof. Sheikh Abdur Rashid, Prof. Dr. Abdul Hamid, Dr. Zafarul Islam, and Dr. Zawar Hussain Zaidi.
      The Research Journal of the History Department entitled Journal of the Punjab University Historical Society is one of the oldest journals of the university. It first appeared in 1932 and is currently being published biannually. It is a journal of international repute.

2021
•	Visit of His Excellency Mr. Khazar Farhadov, Ambassador of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Pakistan to the Department of History & Pakistan Studies, University of the Punjab, delivered a lecture on “Azerbaijan and Pakistan Relations: A Historical Perspective” to the Department’s students on 24th November 2021.
•	A special lecture delivered by Dr Hasan Baig on “Zahiruddin Babur: life and academic activities” was arranged by the Department of History and Pakistan Studies, University of the Punjab, Lahore on 16th November 2021.
•	A special lecture on “IQBAL DAY” delivered by Prof. Dr. Fakhar-ul-Haq Noori was arranged by History Forum, Department of History and Pakistan Studies, University of the Punjab, Lahore on10th November 2021.
•	Online Webinar by Prof. Dr. Iftikhar Haider Malik “On Pashtun Identity and Geopolitics in Asia: Pakistan and Afghanistan before and after 9/11” was organized by Department of History and Pakistan Studies, University of the Punjab, Lahore on 4th November 2021.
•	Round Table Discussion “On 204th Anniversary of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan”, organized by Department of History and Pakistan Studies, University of the Punjab, Lahore on 21st October 2021. Its guest speaker was Syed Muhammad Asadullah.
•	Roundtable Discussion on “Central-South Asia Regional Connectivity: Grand Initiative by His Excellency President Shavkat Mirziyoyev” Organized by Centre for Global & Strategic Studies, Islamabad & Department of History & Pakistan Studies on 12th October 2021. Its guest speaker was H.E Aybek Arif Usmanov, Ambassador of the Republic of Uzbekistan to Pakistan.
•	Young Historians spoke out in the Round Table Talk on “Quaid’s Vision and today’s Pakistan” was organized by Department of History and Pakistan Studies, University of the Punjab, Lahore on 17th August 2021. Its guest speakers were Dr. Raza Taimoor, Dr Ghulam Shabbir, Dr. Adnan Tariq, Ms. Sabah Mushtaq and Mr. Khizr Jawad.
•	Virtual International Conference on “Emerging Trends in the Arts and Humanities” Organized by e Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Punjab, Lahore on 15th June 2021. Its Patron in Chief was PU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Akhtar.
•	An Online National Webinar on “Lahore Resolution and its Regional Perspectives” organized by Department of History and Pakistan Studies, University of the Punjab, Lahore on 24th March 2021. •	International Conference on “Azerbaijan’s Reconstruction to Reconnect: A way forward” Jointly organized by Regional Integration Center, University of the Punjab, Lahore, ADA University, Center for Global and Strategic Studies Islamabad and Department of History and Pakistan Studies, University of the Punjab, Lahore on 8th March 2021. Its main speaker was Mr. Fariz Ismailzade, Executive Vice-Rector, ADA University, Azerbaijan.
•	International Conference on “Legacy of Zaheer-Ud-Din Mohammad Babur and Its Relevance in Contemporary Bilateral Relations between Pakistan and Uzbekistan” was jointly organized by RIC, CGSS and Department of History and Pakistan Studies, University of the Punjab, Lahore on 11th February 2021. Its key speakers were H.E Aybek Arif Usmanov, Ambassador of the Republic of Uzbekistan to Pakistan, Prof. Dr. Saleem Mazhar, Pro-Vice Chancellor PU, Prof. Dr. Amra Raza, Dean Faculty of Arts and Humanities PU, Prof. Dr. Mahboob Hussain, Chairman Department of History and Pakistan Studies, Dr. Faraz Anjum, and Dr. Rukhsana Iftikhar.
